Vodou is one of the most misunderstood spiritual traditions in the world. Popular culture often portrays it as something sinister or dangerous, yet in truth Vodou is a deeply spiritual system built on relationship, ancestry, and respect for the unseen world.

Originating in West African spiritual traditions and carried to the Caribbean during the transatlantic slave trade, Vodou became a powerful way for enslaved people to preserve their identity, culture, and connection to the spirits of their ancestors. Over time it blended with Catholic imagery and local traditions, forming the rich spiritual system practiced in Haiti today.

At the heart of Vodou is the belief that the universe is filled with spiritual forces known as the lwa. These spirits act as intermediaries between humanity and the distant creator. Each lwa carries its own personality, symbols, and areas of influence. Some guide love, some guard the crossroads, others rule over storms, healing, or the world of the dead.

Vodou is not about controlling spirits but forming relationships with them. Through ritual, music, drumming, dance, offerings, and prayer, practitioners invite the lwa into ceremony. In some rituals the spirits may even possess participants, allowing the lwa to speak, dance, and interact with the community.

These ceremonies are not acts of fear but of connection. They strengthen bonds between the living, the spirits, and the ancestors who came before.

Remove the curses, bad luck, evil spirits, negativity from your House! Simple and powerful! It’s working!!!

Garlic, Bay Leaves, and the Red Thread of Protection

This variation appears in several Carpathian and Balkan folk practices. It was used not only to remove curses and bad luck, but also to seal the house so that negativity cannot return.

In older traditions it was often performed by the oldest person in the house or someone considered spiritually strong.

Materials
• 1 glass jar with lid
• 7 cloves of garlic (unpeeled)
• 7 bay leaves
• spring water or clean natural water
• a small pinch of sea salt
• a red thread or red wool string

The red thread in many traditions represents life force, protection, and the blocking of evil influences.

Preparation

Perform the ritual after sunset, when the house is calm and quiet.
1. Wash the jar with clean water.
2. Place the 7 garlic cloves inside.
3. Add the 7 bay leaves.
4. Sprinkle a pinch of salt.
5. Fill the jar with spring water until everything is covered.
6. Close the jar tightly.

While preparing it, focus on your intention to remove curses, misfortune, jealousy, and negative energies from the home.

You may quietly say:

“All harm, ill will, curses, and heavy shadows
leave this house and depart.
Only peace, protection, and light remain.”

Sealing the Jar

Take the red thread and wrap it seven times around the neck of the jar.

Tie seven knots in the thread.

As you tie each knot, you may say:
1. “I close the door to harm.”
2. “I close the door to curses.”
3. “I close the door to jealousy.”
4. “I close the door to bad luck.”
5. “I close the door to sickness.”
6. “I close the door to dark intentions.”
7. “I seal this house in protection.”

In folk belief, the knots lock the negative energy inside the jar and prevent it from spreading again.

Placement

Hide the jar in the place where the energy feels heaviest in the house.

Common places include:
• behind furniture
• inside a cupboard
• under a bed
• near the entrance of the home
• in a dark corner of a room.

It should remain hidden and untouched.

Silence

An important rule in old traditions:

Do not tell anyone that you performed
